The spanish exception"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In English, Spanish, French and German (and many more languages, but these are the ones I use everyday),\u00a0<em>latent\u00a0\u2013\u00a0latente \u2013<\/em>\u00a0refers to what is not obvious, what is apparently inactive but stays alive underneath.\u00a0For a Spanish thinking speaker, the idea of\u00a0<em>latent<\/em> very easily suggest the idea of alive.\u00a0In Spanish latente\u00a0comes not only from\u00a0<em>hiding<\/em>\u00a0(and what is hiding may be alive, if not, it\u2019s only hidden), but fron the verb\u00a0<em>latir<\/em>,\u00a0whose participle present form \u2013\u00a0nowadays disused \u2013\u00a0would be also\u00a0<em>latente*<\/em>,\u00a0and which designates a special way of beating, such as the beating of a living heart \u2013\u00a0indeed hiding in the body. That is why even involving a disused verbal form\u00a0<em>latente<\/em> suggests the idea of\u00a0<em>alive<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nevertheless, this is a false friend. The origin of the Spanish verb\u00a0latir\u00a0has nothing to do with the Latin verb\u00a0<em>latere<\/em>. It comes, in fact, from the Latin verb\u00a0<em>glattire,\u00a0to bark<\/em>, which started to be used as a metaphor of the beating heart by the poets of the renaissance. Note that it was, perhaps, not by chance that hearts barked in the renaissance. A demanding heart is a\u00a0barking heart, and in fact, not long before, in the late middle ages, the idea of\u00a0courtly love\u00a0had come up as a furious lyrical vindication of freedom to love against social rules, courtesy protocols, political and familiar conventions.*<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Anyway, it has been the evolution of languages \u2013 with its subtle, mysterious nooks, jumps, long roads and whimsical shortcuts \u2013 which has merged both words into the same term. <em>Latente<\/em> and <em>latente<\/em>, what hides and what beats, like that mysterious beat that renaissance poets could hear barking deep inside, whenever they auscultate a little in reality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The tendency \u2013 the temptation \u2013 to confound the concepts of <em>latente<\/em> and <em>latir<\/em>, hiding and beating deep inside, is almost inevitable for a Spanish speaking mind, but it is also deeply charged with poetry: Latent is what hides and is what is alive. Latent is the invisible power underneath it all, the seeds, the heart beating in the body, the dormant volcanoes, the origin of earthquakes and the rain before the storm. Latent is in the energy that hides in the phase changes of matter, the forces of resilience, the seeds of freedom, barking in the history of any collective or individual revolution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">* or latiente.
