On a day like any other, Facebook users open their profile and they found a wellcome to what intended as their own biography. \nand disempowered particular political and social groups, sometimes
\nsimultaneously\u2014a fact that is too easy to forget under the sway
\nof technological determinism. Needless to say, such ethical amnesia is
\nrarely in the interests of the disempowered. Robert Pippin, a philosopher
\nat the University of Chicago, argues that society\u2019s fascination with
\nthe technological at the expense of the moral reaches a point where
\n\u201cwhat ought to be understood as contingent, one option among others,
\nopen to political discussion is instead falsely understood as necessary;
\nwhat serves particular interest is seen without reflection, as of universal
\ninterest; what ought to be a part is experienced as a whole.\u201d Facebook\u2019s
\nexecutives justifying their assault on privacy by claiming that this is
\nwhere society is heading anyway is exactly the kind of claim that should
\nbe subject to moral and political\u2014not just technological\u2014scrutiny. It\u2019s
\nby appealing to such deterministic narratives that Facebook manages
\nto obscure its own role in the process.”<\/p>\n
