‘Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima’ by Joe Rosenthal from 1945 is one of the most well-known images of patriotism. But what does the ‘Patria’ in ‘patriotism’ mean – and to kill and die for Patria – compared to life itself? To what extent do we reflect a nation, rather than a planet? What should we seek to protect, together, as a community?
I developed this work in 2015 for the exhibition ‘Kunst der Nachhaltigkeit’(‘Art of Sustainability’), organised by GG3 Gallery for sustainable art in Berlin. This was the 50th Exhibition we made since we founded the gallery.
